Joseph B Tipton Jr

Engineering Analyst, Second Target Station (STS), Spallation Neutron Source (SNS)

Dr. Joseph B. Tipton, Jr. is an Engineering Analyst with the Second Target Station (STS) project for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Joseph spent the first decade of his post-graduate career in engineering education as an undergraduate professor.  During that time, he completed over 8 appointments with the ORNL Fusion Energy Division through the Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE) for Faculty program.  In these projects, Joseph helped design and analyze the thermofluid and structural performance of high heat-flux components for multiple fusion experiments includuing US ITER, W7-X, NSTX-U, and MPEX.

In 2020, Joseph joined ORNL full-time in the STS project.  His areas of contribution and interest include explicit dynamic simulations of proton beam pulse fatigue, statistical analysis of material fatigue experiments, and coupled optimization of spallation target concepts.
